Multiple Affected as In-Flight Disturbance Impacts Delta Aircraft Arriving in Sydney

Several people have been injured when a Delta Airlines flight originating in LA to Sydney was hit by turbulence Friday morning.

The flight, numbered 41 "went through a short bout of rough air" as it touched down at the Sydney airport, a company official informed. Several cabin crew members required medical attention.

The New South Wales Ambulance Service said they treated five individuals, and took a trio to hospital with relatively minor issues that included back pain and headaches. Those affected spanned from their 30s to 70s.

This marks the most recent case of aircraft encountering turbulence, with researchers pointing out that global warming is a key driver.

On board were 245 passengers and fifteen staff members on the aircraft, the official said, adding that the plane touched down "safely" at the airport at 06:48 local time on Friday.

The NSW Ambulance Service indicated they received a call just a mere three minutes before the plane arrived, and emergency vehicles were waiting on the tarmac.

Why plane turbulence is becoming increasingly prevalent - and more severe.

Last year, 25 people sustained injuries when another Delta jet, on a route from Salt Lake City, Utah to Amsterdam, Netherlands, experienced "considerable" rough air just two hours into the long-haul flight, and diverted for an precautionary landing.

Recently, passengers and crew on a certain international flight experienced a terrifying five seconds period of extreme instability. A traveler passed away and dozens were injured, as individuals not fastened in were thrown from their seats and fell back down.

Bumpy air is fairly routine on aircraft journeys, and while instances of strong or severe turbulence are reportedly becoming more frequent, they are remained quite uncommon.

Data suggests that there are an estimated thousands of instances of severe or worse turbulence every year, out of a total of over 35 million journeys that currently occur globally.

Strong atmospheric disturbance is defined as when the sudden jolts of a jet going through rough air masses apply in excess of a significant G-force on your body - a strong enough force to propel you from your seat if you did not have on a restraint.

As climate change alters the conditions in the sky, specialists caution that flying could become less smooth: warming trends and altered air currents in the jet stream level are expected to increase the regularity and severity of dangerous in-flight bumps.
